Who Was Farkhunda?

Farkhunda Malekzada was an educated woman living in Kabul, Afghanistan. She had studied religious sciences and worked to raise social awareness. She not only promoted social consciousness but was also active in advocating for women’s rights and education.

The Beginning of the Incident

in a person’s life. Farkhunda boldly spoke out against this deception, calling it a misleading act.

The confrontation seemed ordinary, but the man, to protect his business, falsely accused Farkhunda of burning the Holy Quran. This claim was completely baseless but immediately inflamed public sentiment. Within moments, a mob gathered. People shouted, carrying sticks and kicking and approaching Farkhunda.

The mob grew so large that someone drove a vehicle into the crowd, making the scene even more lethal. Farkhunda was pushed back, severely beaten with kicks and punches. Meanwhile, police and security personnel were present but could not control the mob; some retreated in fear, while others remained silent spectators. The mob ran her over with a vehicle and then set her body on fire which killed her instantly.

Revealing the Truth

Immediately after the incident, the false accusation shook all of Kabul. But soon, investigations proved that Farkhunda had never burned the Holy Quran nor committed any religious disrespect. The real culprit was the man running the amulet and fake magical powers business, who was

threatened by Farkhunda’s honesty.

That person remains missing to this day. He has neither been brought before the court nor captured. His absence made the incident even more painful, as the real offender remains free despite the truth being revealed.

Punishments

After Farkhunda’s murder, the government launched investigations, resulting in the arrest of around forty people who either participated in the mob or were directly involved in the violence. Some received long prison sentences, while many were later released or pardoned, raising questions about the justice process. The person who falsely accused Farkhunda is still at missing.

Lesson

The tragedy of Farkhunda Malekzada is a harsh reminder of how false accusations, rumors, and mob psychology can take a human life in mere moments. An educated and brave woman lost her life simply for speaking the truth, while the real culprit remains free. Farkhunda’s sacrifice teaches us that the cost of honesty and courage can sometimes be heavier than life itself, and this incident will always be remembered in Afghan history as a painful and instructive chapter.
