The Fate of Musaylimah Al-Kadhab and Khalid ibn Walid(RA) in the Battle of Yamama

The Fate of Musaylimah Al-Kadhab and Khalid ibn Walid(RA) in the Battle of Yamama

During the early days of Islam, the Arabian Peninsula witnessed a critical confrontation between true leadership and false claims of prophethood. Musaylimah Al-Kadhab, a power-seeking leader, falsely claimed prophethood and misled his tribe, challenging the nascent Muslim community. This period set the stage for the pivotal Battle of Yamama, where Khalid ibn Walid (RA) played a decisive role in defending Islam and restoring order.

Today, we take a detailed look at the life of Musaylimah the Liar, his sedition, and his ultimate downfall.

Background of Musaylimah

Musaylimah belonged to the Banu Hanifa tribe in the region of Yamama. This tribe was powerful, prosperous, and proud of its land. Musaylimah was intelligent but deceitful, understanding people’s psychology to manipulate them. Initially, he accepted Islam, but envy and thirst for power were hidden in his heart. Seeing the popularity of the Prophet ﷺ, he thought that if the crown of prophethood was on his head, the Banu Hanifa tribe could rise with pride in Arabia.

False Claim of Prophethood

Musaylimah told his tribe, “I also receive revelation”. He began composing false words in the style of the Quran, but his words lacked the light, eloquence, and spiritual weight of divine speech. He convinced his people that Muhammad ﷺ received half of the prophethood and he received the other half. For ordinary Arabs, this was astonishing, but the pride of Banu Hanifa led them to accept him. Thus, the foundation of a false prophet was laid.

life of the Prophet ﷺ, Musaylimah reached the height of his cunning. He sent a letter to the Prophet ﷺ, saying boldly:

“From Musaylimah the Prophet to Muhammad the Prophet — half of the land is yours, half is mine.”

The Prophet ﷺ replied:

“The land belongs to Allah; He gives it to whomever He wills.”

This response became a crushing blow to his false claim, but Musaylimah did not relent. He misled his followers through false worship, meaningless invocations, and self-made verses. He claimed, “Angels also deliver messages to me,” while producing foolish and absurd words that were as weightless as grains of sand compared to the eloquence of the Quran.

Battle of Yamama and Khalid ibn al-Walid(RA)

After the passing of the Prophet ﷺ, during the caliphate of Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA), waves of apostasy rose. The Yamama incident became a severe test. Musaylimah strengthened his false claim of prophethood and gathered a large army, supported by his devoted tribe. To protect Islam, Abu Bakr (RA) acted with bravery and wisdom and appointed Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA) to lead the army.

Khalid (RA)’s speed, discipline, and swift cavalry were key to this battle. Both armies faced each other in the harsh conditions of Yamama; the air echoed with Takbeer, spears and swords gleamed, and the battlefield quickly turned red with blood. Many renowned Companions and Quran memorizers participated, and the heavy sacrifice of lives later paved the way for the compilation of the Quran.

the peak of the battle, Hazrat Wahshi (RA) (who had previously martyred Hazrat Hamza (RA) in the Battle of Uhud and later repented) displayed great courage. According to traditions, the one who killed Musaylimah with a spear is generally said to be Wahshi (RA) — this strike destroyed Musaylimah’s dreams of power forever. After his death, his followers scattered, and the victory at Yamama dealt a severe blow to the waves of apostasy, restoring unity and stability of Islam across the Arabian Peninsula.

Musaylimah’s End — The Lesson

When Musaylimah fell to the ground, around him was the dust, blood, and cries of the Battle of Yamama. The echoes of “Allahu Akbar” still rang loudly in the air, but to his ears, they seemed like the bells of Judgment Day. In his eyes, the dreams of power shattered like broken mirrors, and the pride that had led him into false prophethood had faded. His followers had dispersed — some captured, some dead, and some shedding tears of repentance.

Thus, the structure of lies built on deceit and falsehood collapsed to the ground in an instant. Musaylimah’s end became a mark of warning in history. It stands as eternal proof that prophethood is a gift from Allah, not a human desire. Whoever tries to exploit this sacred position for worldly power and fame meets only humiliation, defeat, and destruction. In the field of Yamama, a lie was buried forever, while the flag of truth remained raised as always.
